Spurgeon observed that this is “one of the shortest Psalms to read, but one of the longest to learn.”

1. Humble Your Heart [Psalm 131:1]

     a. Denies Pride

         * Pride brings destruction, distance, and death.

         i. Haughty Heart

        ii. High Eyes

     b. Denies Presumption [Job 42:3; Deut. 29:29]

         *Humility does not complain about God's providential purposes in our lives (e.g. the place, people, position, prominence, or productivity he's given us).

2. Hush Your Soul [Psalm 131:2]

     *Pride brings agitation, anger, and anxiety, but humility brings serenity.

     a. Jesus was perfectly gentle and humble of heart [Matt. 11:29]

     b. We must receive the kingdom of God like a child [Matt. 18:1–4]

3. Hope in Your Lord [Psalm 131:3]

     a. God's used David's difficulty to teach us to depend on him.

     b. One of God's purposes in our pain is comforting the church. [2 Cor. 1:3–4]
