Apostles' Creed

In the earliest form, “The Apostles' Creed” emerged as a list of questions, which candidates for baptism would be asked as they prepared to enter the visible membership of the church of Jesus Christ. This question-and-answer format of The Apostles’ Creed was used by a pastor in Rome named Hippolytus as early as 215 AD. “The Creed” was refined throughout the years, and it likely reached its final form sometime around the seventh century. To be sure, The Apostles’ Creed was not so much written by Jesus’ Apostles as it was written to reflect the teaching of Jesus’ Apostles. The goal was to put into words a succinct summation of the Christian faith. In this series, what we’re really doing is examining and explaining the biblical underpinnings of the Creed. In one respect, this is not series on the Creed, so much as it is a series on the doctrine of the Bible that the Creed seeks to summarize.
