Satan and the Sword of the Spirit

A friend was recently confessing to me some struggles, and he was surprised when I mentioned that the Devil might be involved. We easily forget that he prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). This is one of the “weird” things that we as Christians believe – that is, it is weird in the eyes of the world. What is the Devil’s main aim in attacking the people of God? I think Don Matzat got it right when he wrote,

“It is the primary task of the Devil to remove from us the Word of God, primarily the good news of the Gospel. He attacks our faith. In the parable of the sower, our Lord Jesus identified the birds who steal the newly sown seed as the Devil. He does not want us to believe, confess, and stand upon the Word of God.”

If the Devil really does want to remove the Word of God from us, then how much more should we cling to it and use it against him? We should not hand him the handle of the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17), instead we should get a tight grip and ask God to wield it for our good and his glory.
