Praying the Bible: Psalm 12

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

For those of you who have been through a membership interview with me you’ll recall that I conclude the membership interview with “7 things we tell each incoming member.” One of those things is that I encourage each incoming member to pray regularly, even daily, for their fellow church members. I encourage you to pray God’s Word for your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Ordinarily, I even try to briefly demonstrate that using the passage of Scripture that I’ll be preaching from.

Some passages are easier to pray from than others. One of the more difficult passages (but I don’t think it is in the most difficult categories) are those like Psalm 12. If it is of any help, here is how I prayed Psalm 12 for members of our congregation this past week. Feel free to use these to pray for your fellow members. I’ll offer just one short suggestion from each verse, but there can be more than one way to pray each verse (By the way, it might help to have a Bible open to Psalm 12 as you consider how I’m suggesting we can pray these verses).

Verse 1 – Heavenly Father, help Rebecca to be faithful to you this day, do not let her vanish as a light to lead others to the Savior, In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Verse 2 – Heavenly Father, help John to speak truth and to have a heart of single-minded devotion to you, In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Verse 3 – Heavenly Father, help Danita to speak with humility, boasting only in the cross of our Savior, In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Verse 4 – Heavenly Father, help Janet to proclaim with her tongue that you are her Lord and master, In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Verse 5 – Heavenly Father, help Jeanette to long for the safety of her home in heaven with you, In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Verse 6 – Heavenly Father, help Phyllis to recognize that your words are pure and so treasure them each day, In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Verse 7 – Heavenly Father, help Chris to recognize that he can look to you as his protector and keeper, In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Verse 8 – Heavenly Father, help Donna to recognize that the world all around her is dangerous and that safety is only found in you, In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

I hope that this is a helpful demonstration of how we can pray God’s Word for one another. We very much need it!

Warmly in Christ,
Mike
